Candidate Bios - Senate Members

Senators:

Adutiya Satyam

My name is Adutiya Satyam and I am a senior at ASU Poly. I have been an active student on the campus and in the past I have represented Arizona Student Association and have worked on few bills. I am happy to let everyone know that the last bill I was working on known as SAFRA has been passed in the legislature.

I have seen many ups and downs on this campus and from my experience I think we need a good student body in the office. We need more student voice in the meetings and make sure its being heard at all the levels.

As a residence of South Desert Village, I would like to see better infrastructures on this campus. If chosen as a senator, I will be working on agendas which include:

  • Getting the pending bills pass in the office.
  • Increased Poly representation
  • Better food on campus.
  • Safety and infrastructure around campus which covers street lights and paved roads.

Thanking you all,
Sincerely,
Adutiya

I am here to represent students! Use me as your sounding board! ASU Poly has a lot of potential!

With your vote we can fix fundamental issues at this University! Tired of $200 textbooks? Can’t find a parking space? Did you have to arm wrestle someone in order to get registered for classes?

Escalating tuition is ABSURD. I represented ASU Poly at the Board of Regents tuition hearing on March 1st. Guess what? I counted 2 other students there.

The bottom line is: price of tuition should be going DOWN not UP. It should be very inexpensive to educate students with the technological advances that make record keeping, grading, and information dissemination so much more efficient. Look at how many more people are graduating from college compared to 20 years ago. The cost per pupil should be coming down because of economies of scale. Tuition increases at ASU are a direct result of the huge burdensome administration and out of control spending.

I challenged ASU President Michael Crow to create an efficient New American University at the ASU Polytechnic town hall meeting February 24th. As I see the situation, a huge increase in tuition is simply not an option for next year’s graduating class. Nor is it an option for every graduating class going forward. The current tuition increase sets a huge precedent for future increases. It sends a clear message: when the university is in pinch money wise, simply charge it to the students.

ASU needs to find ways to make itself more affordable, not LESS affordable. I see countless common sense solutions. For example, are ASU billboards across Phoenix really necessary? ASU needs to adopt the easy solutions and make the hard choices necessary for responsible spending without sacrificing quality of education in the classroom.

Tyler Collum

My name is Tyler Collum and I am running for a student senator position. I think the food variety and quality needs to be improved on ASU Poly. All we have to eat from is the Union and it has such limited variety, not to mention the lack of healthy food items. Eating the same things week after week for a whole semester drives a person nuts. If I am elected, I will work to get more kinds of food onto campus and healthier food options.

Derek Greer

The Associated Students of Arizona State University at Polytechnic (ASASUP) is the east campus student body government. It provides a channel for Poly students to voice their needs and concerns. The ASASUP works with faculty, students and the community. This connection provides communication between students and the surroundings that affect their everyday lives and futures.

Some key issues to consider for the term to come are tuition increases, a decrease in programs available for Poly students, budget cuts, community involvement, going green and better unification of our student governments. I will be working diligently to gather students’ inputs on these issues so they will be assured that their concerns will be addressed. I will remain proactive, especially when it comes down to difficult decisions and situations. I am passionate about life and love working with people, if you vote for me you will not be disappointed. Many other candidates can offer the world, but when it comes down to it, they lack the necessary personality to truly make a difference. It takes a strong yet compassionate person to represent an entire student community effectively and efficiently.

ASU has one of the largest enrollments in the United States, if we work together this is a tremendous source of power for us students. It is important for us to all work together by maintaining quality relations with our fellow students so that we may build an even stronger student community. Help support a more unified student government by voting for me, Derek Greer, as Senator. I promise to provide a positive and unbiased representation of the student community here at ASU Polytechnic. If I am elected Senator, I will work hard to build these relations to provide students with the voice they deserve. Thank you for your support and consideration.

Mariah Kingman

I am running for a senator position to improve the quality of life for everyone on the Polytechnic campus. Improving the streets, sidewalks, and lighting all over our campus are a few of my top priorities. With these improvements, Poly will be more accessible and safer for everyone at night and during the day. The improvement of the pavement and sidewalks will also allow for more recreation around campus, whether it is riding a bicycle, skate boarding, running, or just a nice walk. With more sidewalks, there will be less jay walking and more space between cars and pedestrians. New dormitories are also on the top of my priorities. I have lived on campus for two years, one year at Palo Blanco and the other year in Talon, and I know that these improvements are way past due. Most if not all of the dorms are the original buildings from when Poly used to be Williams Air Force Base fifty years ago. We deserve modern living facilities with adequate appliances. The new dorms have the potential to be more energy efficient and green buildings, thus saving ASU and its students money. I want to bring ASU Poly up and past the quality of main campus. Please vote for me, Mariah Kingman, for student senator.

Daki Nawaratne

I am Daki Nawaratne a freshman in the Business Administration major, as an international student running for Senator at the Associate Students of Arizona State University Polytechnic (ASASUP) I want to diminish the wide known negative image of the Polytechnic campus and create room for students to improve quality of university life and increase ASU pride. I have been involved within the Arizona State University Polytechnic in many different events such as the National Association for Campus Activities in Boston and the Cooley Leadership Summit.
I have been a regular member of the Programming and Activities Board (PABp) and I was accepted as a Student Orientation Leader as well as a Community Assistant for the next academic year. I hope to be a senator for the next academic year to complete some of the projects from the previous administration as well as some limitations that need to be addressed to improve student life within the Polytechnic campus.

My main concerns of improvement are:

  • Increased security for students around campus
  • Better food choice and facilities
  • Increased recreation facilities
  • Creating a United Diverse community
  • Represent International Students and voice their issues
  • Enhance overall Quality of University life.

As a student involved throughout the campus I understand the improvements that need to be made for us as students and what we look for within a university as students. Help me build the University we as the student body expects to be in.

Let me voice your issues and represent you all within ASASUP.

Together we stand to create a better tomorrow within ASU Polytechnic campus.

AJ Whelan

Hello ASU! My name is Aj Whelan-Gonzales and, if elected, I will work to bring free puppies to Polytechnic!
Just kidding.

No, in all seriousness- I would love to represent you as a Senator in the ASU Polytechnic Student Government. I am a third-generation Sun-Devil (my grandparents were students here when this was still Normal College), and quite frankly, I love ASU; I love the professors; I love the students, and I especially love the direction President Crow is taking ASU as a New American University. As a Senator, I hope to realize President Crow’s dream of Polytechnic as, “a global role model,” and will strive for excellence as we enter this new era of explosive growth. I will do everything in my power to make sure that the students’ voices are heard as well. You want a new rec center? -We’ll get a new rec center. You want more parking spaces? -We’ll get more parking spaces. You want more friends? Well… I can’t promise you more friends, BUT I will be your friend… And hopefully your Senator as well.
