Swim Lessons

Registration:

Swim lesson registration is off and running. We will try to post updated class availability here, so please check back. If you have questions please call 480-727-1971 or e-mail polypool@asu.edu. We will be open for swim lesson registration from 9am-5pm each weekday and are working on moving the registration to the pool deck after 5pm. Thanks for all of your support and patronage. NOTE: Level 5 classes will be offered each of the remaining three sessions. We are also considering afterschool lessons in August. Please let us know if you are interested.

Cost for the lessons is $30 for a two week session. Sessions are every two weeks, taught Monday through Thursday. Evening lessons are available as well.

Swim lessons are open to the public. Lessons range from Parent - Tot to Level 4, which teaches advanced strokes.

Parent - Tot

Parents and children 6 months-3 yrs of age. Parents will work one-on-one with their child in a group setting to encourage water exploration, having fun and becoming comfortable in and around the water. (Parents must be in the water with their child.)

Tiny Tots

For children 3-5 yrs old. Children will learn water adjustment skills and become more comfortable in and around the water without a parent present. Children will learn water safety and swimming readiness skills. This class is designed for children who may not be comfortable in the Level 1 setting, or who are too short (<3ft tall) to stand in the shallow end without assistance.

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills

Purpose: Enable students to feel comfortable in water.
Level 1 participants learn to:

  • Exhale underwater through mouth and nose
  • Open eyes underwater, pick up submerged object
  • Change direction in the water
  • Roll over from front to back and back to front with support
  • Explore floating on front and back with support
  • Explore swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions
  • Use a life jacket

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Purpose: Develop student success in basic skills.
Level 2 participants learn to:

  • Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side
  • Submerge entire head
  • Perform front and back glide
  • Roll over from front to back, back to front
  • Change direction of travel paddling on front or back
  • Tread water using arm and leg motions (chest-deep water)
  • Swim on front, back, and side using both arm and leg actions

Level 3: Stroke Introduction

Purpose: Builds on the skills learned in Level 2.
Level 3 participants learn to:

  • Jump into deep water from the side
  • Dive from kneeling or standing position
  • Submerge and retrieve an object in chest deep water
  • Rotary breathing in horizontal position
  • Float on front and back in deep water
  • Tread water using hand and leg movements
  • Butterfly—kick and body motion
  • Perform the HELP and Huddle positions and a reaching assist

Level 4: Stroke Development

Purpose: Develops confidence in skills acquired and improve on additional aquatic skills.
Level 4 participants learn to:

  • Perform a dive from a standing or stride position
  • Swim underwater
  • Perform open turns on front and back
  • Perform front and back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke
