Martin recognized for his arboriculture research
The International Society for Arboriculture Western Region recognized Chris Martin, professor in the Department of Applied Biological Sciences, with the Award for Arboriculture Research. Arboriculture is the scientific cultivation of trees and shrubs. He was recognized for his outstanding contribution to research done over a number of years that has contributed substantially to the sum knowledge of arboriculture. He was presented the award in San Jose May 2 at the Western Chapter ISA Annual Conference. He and one other active member were recognized with the honor. Martin said it’s particularly difficult to achieve this award, especially for someone in Arizona.

About Applied Biological Sciences
What is Applied Biological Sciences?
The Department of Applied Biological Sciences offers rigorous and practical programs in applications of the biological sciences. Consistent with our polytechnic vision, our programs involve extensive student interaction with the faculty through experience-based learning activities including laboratories, field trips, internships, and faculty-guided research and service-learning projects. Mastery of fundamental biological principles is emphasized through quality learning in the classroom and hands-on activities in our laboratories and in the living laboratory of the Sonoran Desert and surrounding ecosystems.
Graduates can pursue entry-level careers in Wildlife and Restoration Ecology, Urban Horticulture, and Secondary Education. The general program in Applied Biological Sciences also prepares graduates to succeed in graduate school and professional schools in disciplines such as animal health, environmental biotechnology, medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, ecology, horticulture and wildlife biology.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR of WILDLIFE BIOLOLGY
Arizona State University at the Polytechnic campus, School of Arts and Applied Sciences, the Department of Applied Biological Sciences invites application for a tenure track assistant professor for August 2008.
Duties:
The successful candidate will teach and conduct research in the field of wildlife biology with specific emphasis on habitat management. Teaching responsibilities may include introductory courses in biology and wildlife management. The candidate is expected to develop undergraduate and graduate course work related to their area of expertise. Additionally, the candidate is expected to establish and conduct a vigorous extramurally funded research program.
Qualifications:
Required: Applicants must at the time of appointment have a Ph.D. in Wildlife Biology or related field with evidence of teaching and research experience. Applied research in the fields of fisheries, herpetology, or ornithology, as related to riparian ecology and demonstrated knowledge and experience in working with management agencies is highly desirable.
General Information:
The faculty of the Department of Applied Biological Sciences are teachers/scholars who are committed to: 1) providing undergraduate and graduate students and education emphasizing applications of the biological sciences and 2) advancing knowledge in their chosen fields of study. Consistent with the polytechnic vision, the Wildlife and Ecological Restoration concentration within the Department of Applied Biological Sciences emphasizes acquiring knowledge through practical experience. Therefore, the undergraduate program is professionally focused, requires substantial laboratory, and field experience with the result being extensive hands-on interaction between faculty and students.

MICROBIOLOGY LECTURER
Essential Functions:
Teach, and mentor students. Job responsibilities will be: a) teach applied biological sciences courses in the area of microbiology at the undergraduate level, b) prepare, teach, and take-down laboratory activities as associated with assigned courses, c) provide service to the ABS Department, the School of Applied Arts and Sciences, and ASU Polytechnic campus.
Qualifications:
Required:
A Masters of Science or Ph.D. in Microbiology or a related field
Desired:
Experience teaching at the collegiate level
A combination of academic and applied experience in the area of microbiology

General Information:
The Department of Applied Biological Sciences is located on the Arizona State University Polytechnic campus in Mesa Arizona. The Department provides a general undergraduate degree in Applied Biological Sciences with optional concentrations in Wildlife and Ecological Restoration, Secondary Education, Urban Horticulture, and General Biology, and at the graduate level a Master of Science degree with the same emphases. The Department currently has 13 faculty and lecturers with approximately 130 undergraduate and 30 graduate students.
