Welcome to the Department of Exercise and Wellness

Promoting healthy lifestyles is a key component of a prosperous global society and is important for an individual’s day-to-day health and wellbeing. Regular physical activity is the best prescription known to reduce the risks of many chronic diseases and disabling conditions and it is effective in improving mental health and physical function as one ages. The need for qualified, educated professionals in the areas of exercise and wellness and healthy lifestyle promotion is growing. Graduates from programs in the Department of Exercise and Wellness have developed the skills and strategies needed to promote physical activity and health in community, rehabilitation, academic, business, and agency settings. Graduates are prepared for jobs as health promotion specialists, wellness directors, physical activity and fitness leaders, spa directors, exercise physiologists, and college and university professors, just to name a few.

2008 - EXW Bids Farewell to Dr. Catrine Tudor-Locke

After 7 years at ASU, Dr. Tudor-Locke is leaving ASU for a position as Associate Professor in the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a unit within Louisiana State University. Dr. Tudor-Locke will be affiliated with the Population Sciences Program and Director of the Walking Behavior Laboratory in the Physical Activity Epidemiology Division. In her position, Dr. Tudor-Locke will perform research on walking and health and collaborate with other to advance understanding of the role of physical activity and various health outcomes. Dr. Tudor-Locke will remain affiliated with EXW as an Adjunct Faculty. We also congratulate Dr. Tudor-Locke on her nomination to the ACSM Board of Trustees and wish her the very best in her new position. Heartfelt thanks are given to CTL for all she has done for our students and Department over the years.

Best Wishes to Post-Doctoral Researcher Dr. Kelley Pettee

In June, after completing her 2 year post-doctoral research position, Dr. Kelley Pettee will begin her academic career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska’s College of Public Health. Her appointment will be in the Department of Health Promotion, Social, and Behavioral Health. While at ASU, Dr. Pettee completed a validity and reliability study of physical activity questionnaires used in epidemiological studies of middle-age and older women. The study was funded by the ACSM Paffenbarger-Blair award. Dr. Pettee also was provided leadership for the Building Healthy Lifestyles conference. We wish Dr. Pettee great success in her new career and welcome her back for sun and warm winter weather
