Croatia has a deep and long-standing marketing tradition. Nestled at the crossroads of Europe (link to map of Europe, maps of Croatia), much of present-day Croatia, particularly Istria and Dubrovnik, was a pillar of the Renaissance. Records indicate the person who opened the East to spice and silk trading, Marco Polo, was originally from the Island of Korcula, on the Dalmatian coast. Croatian universities had marketing and commerce curricula over 400 years ago, and even when Croatia was a Republic in the former Yugoslavia, it was known as a European leader in marketing education, innovation and practice. Because of its rich history in international trade and commerce and because of its strategic "crossroads" location, Croatia is an amalgam of many cultural influences. Consider that Croatia actually has 2 names. Croatia is the Latin name for the country and the name most people know. However, Croatians, primarily a Slavic people, use the Slavic name for their country, Hrvatska. This name is pronounced Her-vaht-ska, with the primary accent on the second syllable, a secondary accent on the last syllable and a slight trill of the r. The people refer to themselves as Hrvati.
