Submissions & Manuscript Guidelines

Style Guide for Paper Submission

Clifford J. Shultz, II, Arizona State University, USA

Bruno Grbac, University of Rijeka, Croatia

In order for a paper to be included in the Conference Proceedings, it must meet the prescribed guidelines.  Papers that do not meet these guidelines will not be included for publication.  This document provides examples of the required format to be used by authors when preparing their papers for publication in the Proceedings.

Introduction

Final iterations of papers should be submitted via e-mail attachment to Cliff Shultz (atcjs@asu.edu) and Betsy Conklin (bets@asu.edu), no later than MAY 1, 2000. The preferable page layout is size 8.5 x 11 inches. We also will try to accommodate manuscripts on “European-sized” lay outs, as we are not yet sure in which format the Proceedings will be published.  You must submit your attachment in MS Word (PC version. Please follow all instructions precisely; papers that deviate cannot be accepted.

Before You Begin

Length

Try to limit your final iteration to a maximum of twenty pages, including tables, figures, appendices and references.

Word Processor Settings

Margins should be set at 1" top and bottom and 1" right and left.  Again, paper size ideally should be set for 8.5" by 11." Base font should be set at Times New Roman, Times Roman, or CG Times, in 11 -point size.  All text should be left-justified

Preparing Your Paper

Heading

A full horizontal line should be drawn at the top of the first page.  One line is skipped; then the title should be printed in upper and lower case letters, 20 point type, and flush to the left margin.  Titles that fill more than one line should be single spaced and each line left-justified.

The author(s) and affiliation(s) should be flush-left, single-spaced, and typed at the beginning of the second line below the title as shown above.  Use 11 point type.  Do not use titles such as "Dr." or "Professor," etc.  Additional authors and affiliations should be stacked under the first.

Skip one line; place another full horizontal line after all the authors and affiliations have been listed.  This separates the heading from the text.

Sub-Headings within the Body

First level sub-headings should be left-justified, boldface, in upper and lower case, and printed in 11 point type. (For example, please see the "Introduction" sub-heading in the left column.) Second level subheadings should be left-justified, upper and lower case, in bold italics and printed in 11 point type. (For example, see the sub-heading for this section.) Do not use headings other than these two types.

Abstract

All papers begin with an abstract of 100 words or less.  The abstract should be single-spaced and italicized.  Type size should be 11 point.

Body

The body of the paper should be single-spaced and should immediately follow the abstract.  Be sure to begin with a first level sub-heading (see section on "headings") after the abstract and before the first paragraph of the body of the paper to clearly separate the two.  Use 11 point type for the body of the paper.

Spacing

Single space the body of the paper.  Double space before first and second level sub-headings (in other words, leave one blank line).  Sub-headings that take more than one line should be single-spaced.  Double space between each listing in the reference section.

Figures and Tables

Figures and Tables should appear within the body of the paper and should be numbered consecutively.  The figure or table number and description should appear in boldface 11 point type at the top.  A horizontal line is used to separate table column labels and is also used at the bottom of the table or figure (see example below).  Any illustrations, symbols or parts of a figure which cannot be printed should be carefully drawn with black ink.  Under no circumstance may tables or figures be printed sideways.

Appendices

Appendices, if used, should immediately follow the body of the paper and precede the references.  The word "appendix" should be left-justified at the top of each appendix.  If there is more than one appendix, number each consecutively.

Citations and References

Reference and citation style should follow AMA or JMM format.  Therefore, the references must be placed at the end of the document.  Please write the book, journal, or paper series in italics; an example is as follows:

Carsky, M., R. Dickinson and C. Canedy (1998), "The Evolution of Quality in Consumer Goods," Journal of Macromarketing, 18 (2), 132-144.

In the text, please cite only the last name of the author(s) and include the year in parentheses; an example is as follows: (Carsky, Dickinson and Canedy 1998). Of course direct quotes should include a page number as part of the citation.

The reference section, including all citations used, must be included in your paper.  The word "References" should appear left-justified above the list. Entries should appear in alphabetical order, with a hanging indent.  If several works are cited for any given author, write out the name of the author each time the name appears.

Submission Requirements

Again, the deadline for final submissions is MAY 1, 2000, at the latest.  If you have any questions please contact Cliff Shultz at Arizona State University, Morrison School of Agribusiness and Resource Management, PO Box 7100, Mesa, AZ 85212; tel 480 727 1242; fax 480 727 1961; email: atcjs@asu.edu.

Again, manuscripts should be 15-20 pages in length, including all tables, figures, appendices and references. Figures and tables may be either embedded in the text or included at the end of the manuscript.

Completed and working papers are acceptable; abstracts are not.  All manuscripts should be written in English; the Conference Proceedings will be published in English.

Footnotes and endnotes are not encouraged; endnotes are not acceptable.  Please use footnotes sparingly.

Again, please contact the Conference or Track Chairs, should you have questions.
