Hilliard to speak about his new book, experience as Black Panther member
Monday, January 28, 2008
MESA, Ariz. — The Campus Environment Teams at Arizona State University’s Downtown, Polytechnic and Tempe campuses are sponsoring a book signing and presentation by David Hilliard, a founding member and chief of staff of the now defunct Black Panther Party and incomparable authority on the life, legacy, and intellectual history of Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton.
“The Campus Environment Teams, whose mission is to create and maintain a civil and just campus environment, are pleased to bring a presenter with Mr. Hilliard’s experience and knowledge in social change advocacy,” said Joel Hutchinson, chair of the CET at the Polytechnic campus and director of Student Counseling Services.
Hilliard’s recently published book, titled “Black Panther,” is a collection of pages from the original groundbreaking editions of the Black Panther Party’s news service and original essays by Hilliard, Elaine Brown, Dr. Stan Oden, Craig Laurence Rice, Kumasi, and Joshua Bloom.
In addition to discussing the book, Hilliard will engage in conversation pertaining to the Black Panthers, and he will discuss historical misconceptions by society at large about the group. He provides his perspective about where we are in our nation’s history as it relates to diversity, and how we can further bring about changes to those continuing barriers that keep all of us from achieving our dreams and goals of social justice.
Since 1993, Hilliard has directed the activities of the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation, a grass-roots community-based non-profit organization committed to preserving and fostering Newton’s intellectual legacy. The foundation has collected Newton's writings covering the “Huey P. Newton Reader,” (Seven Stories, 2002), and his early work, “To Die for the People,” in addition to reissuing Newton’s autobiography, “Revolutionary Suicide.” A photographic history of the party, “The Legacy of the Panthers,” has also been published. Hilliard’s work with the foundation has been featured in The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times, as well as on National Public Radio and the Pacifica Radio Network.
Hilliard has taught at Merritt College and Laney College in the Peralta Community College system and the New College of California, and lectures frequently throughout the United States. He was an advisor on the feature film, “Panther,” and on the Spike Lee-directed movie, “A Huey P. Newton Story.”
