Refugees to share Voices from Darfur

Friday, February 1, 2008

MESA, Ariz. — The Martin Luther King Committee at Arizona State University’s Polytechnic campus will sponsor a presentation by the national speaking tour Voices from Darfur at 7 p.m., Feb. 13, in the Student Union Cooley Ballrooms. The evening will feature a short documentary film as well as Darfuri refugees who will reveal their lives and stories of escape from the genocide in Darfur, an area along the western border of The Republic of Sudan in Africa.

Since the beginning of the conflict in Darfur in 2003, more than 400,000 people have been killed and over 2.5 million people have been displaced. The United States government has labeled the conflict genocide as hundreds of thousands of Darfuri people have been terrorized by the militant Janjaweed.

The general public is invited to this free event to hear Voices from Darfur and learn how to help end the genocide. The evening is being presented as part of ASU’s Martin Luther King, Jr. 2008 Celebration. Information and a calendar of events can be found at www.asu.edu/mlk.
