I am currently developing a psychophysics of social perception, as well as methods to identify biases in such perception. This could facilitate selecting the right individuals for jobs in which unbiased accuracy and rapid decision-making is essential, for example, in military security or air traffic control. I am also interested in general assessments of cognitive functioning under conditions of high stress and/or fundamental motivations. I have an abiding interest in evolutionary psychology, and a background in social psychology, which has sensitized me to both ultimate and proximate sources of bias, e.g. stereotyping, self-presentation, and attribution errors. My newest interest is in developing agent based models and dynamical simulations of complex social systems.

I direct the Human Interaction with Technology (HIT) Lab. My research focuses on two areas - Human factors and consumer psychology. I specialize in cognitive human factors in product design, including small screen and hand held devices, medical devices and aviation displays and controls. I am also interested in the human factors of aging. My consumer psychology work focuses on brand personality and consumer decision-making. I teach Human Factors, Advanced Human Factors and Advanced Industrial/Organizational Psychology.

I am director of the Perception & Action Lab (PAL).  My research explores basic aspects of human visual-motor control with an emphasis on the demanding actions involved in driving, flying, and sports. Real-world applications of this research include training & coaching in sports, design of flight simulator displays, accident analysis and prevention, and driver distraction.  I am also interested in how we combine information from our different senses (in particular vision, audition, and touch) and how sensory integration can be utilized to improve interface design.

My main research focus involves exploring the interaction between learner characteristics and how well people comprehend material from different educational interfaces.  The goal of my research is to not only understand this interaction, but to use this information to design tools that maximize learning and ease of use.  For example, work is currently ongoing examining the influence of spatial and attentional abilities on learning scientific topics from different web-interfaces and visualizations. I also head the Applied Cognitive Theory, Usability and Advanced Learning (ACTUAL) Laboratory here at ASU Polytechnic.  In my lab, we employ various methodologies in the pursuit of this interaction between learner and interface, ranging from traditional behavioral designs to more advanced eye-tracking and video-protocol analyses.

My current research interests include abductive reasoning (reasoning to an explanation), development of models of human cognition to support language understanding and decision making in intelligent agents, investigation of the conditions promoting and inhibiting transfer of training, an analysis of information priorities in aviation, and development of Pathfinder Network software.  My teaching interests include cognitive science, statistics and experimental design, and computer programming using MATLAB.
