Dietetic Internship Program
Arizona State University's Polytechnic campus provides an opportunity to complete a Dietetic Internship
(DI) to students admitted to the Department of Nutrition Master of Science (M.S.) Degree program.
The ASU DI program meets the requirements necessary for the graduate to be eligible for the American Dietetic Association (ADA) registration examination. Students typically apply to the DI program the year following acceptance into the M.S. degree program, if
ADA Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) requirements have been met. Students must complete both the M.S. Degree requirements and the DI practicum requirements to satisfy the DI requirements. Upon completion of both of these requirements, students will be provided with a Verification Statement indicating their eligibility to sit for the Registration Examination for Dietitians.
The DI program is currently Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education
of The American Dietetic Association (ADA), 120 S. Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL
60606-6995, 312/899-0040 ext 5400.
The ASU DI program is a general emphasis internship designed to provide didactic and clinical experiences to meet the Performance Requirements established by the ADA.
The mission of the DI is to develop entry-level dietitians who have the skills necessary to transfer nutrition knowledge into actual application and practice in diverse settings. The DI provides a strong core of clinical experiences in which the interns will use knowledge gained in their undergraduate and graduate studies to assist families/patients to improve their nutrition knowledge and health. The program requires completion of a 30 credit M.S. Degree, thesis, and approximately 950 hours (about seven months full-time) of a dietetic practicum.
The goals of the program are to:
Provide a rigorous and complete education that is not only based on scientific knowledge, but also interpretive expertise and problem-solving abilities that can be used to
apply nutrition knowledge in administrative, clinical and community dietetic roles.
- Prepare graduates who have met entry-level performance requirements as
defined by the American Dietetic Association and have completed the
university and departmental requirements for an M.S. degree.
- Prepare graduates who are able to work in diverse settings and with professionals in other areas of medicine/health and industry.
The Dietetic Internship prepares entry-level dietitians for careers in a variety of health care settings, including hospitals, health care agencies, government, food industries, restaurants, schools and private practice. Dietitians assist individuals and families in choosing food for adequate nutrition in health or disease throughout the life cycle, supervise the preparation and service of food in groups, develop modified diets and participate in nutrition research.
Who is Eligible
- Graduate students who are currently in good academic standing in the M.S. degree program at ASU's Polytechnic campus and who have completed at least six graduate semester hours from the ASU Department of Nutrition (students apply to the M.S. program first, then the DI program during their first year of graduate school);
or
- students who have already completed the Master of Science in Human Nutrition from ASU and meet all other admission requirements.
In
addition, before beginning the ASU Dietetic Internship, all students must
provide official transcripts showing completion of at least a
bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and also a signed verification statement from
a CADE-accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics.
