Biography
Laurence Gesell has been a member of the ASU faculty since 1984. In 2007 he was transferred to the faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences as part of the founding faculty for the Science, Technology, and Society (STS) program. Previous faculty appointments have included Professor of Aeronautical Engineering Technology in the College of Engineering and Applied Science; Professor of Aeronautical Management Technology in the College of Technology and Applied Sciences; Adjunct Professor for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (1986-1989); Lecturer in the College of Business at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo (1983-1984); and Instructor in the Department of Aviation at Northern Virginia Community College (1976-1979).
He has authored more than 20 books, numerous professional papers, journal articles and final consultant reports. Prior to ASU, Dr. Gesell was the Airports Manager for the County of San Luis Obispo, California (1979-1984), and is an Accredited Airport Executive (AAE). From 1973-1979, he was a project manager with Howard, Needles, Tammen and Bergendoff, a leading design firm of architects, engineers and planners. Dr. Gesell is a commercially rated pilot, retired Lieutenant Colonel, Master Army Aviator, and veteran of the Vietnam conflict where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He is a 2008 inductee into the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame.
