Welcome to the Department of Exercise and Wellness
Promoting healthy lifestyles is a key component of a prosperous global society and is important for an individual’s day-to-day health and wellbeing. Regular physical activity is the best prescription known to reduce the risks of many chronic diseases and disabling conditions and it is effective in improving mental health and physical function as one ages. The need for qualified, educated professionals in the areas of exercise and wellness and healthy lifestyle promotion is growing. Graduates from programs in the Department of Exercise and Wellness have developed the skills and strategies needed to promote physical activity and health in community, rehabilitation, academic, business, and agency settings. Graduates are prepared for jobs as health promotion specialists, wellness directors, physical activity and fitness leaders, spa directors, exercise physiologists, and college and university professors, just to name a few.
If you have a passion for health, exercise and wellness, a degree from the Department of Exercise and Wellness will provide you with the tools you need to find a successful career promoting healthy lifestyles.

2008 - Third Annual Building Healthy Lifestyles Conference a great success
Nearly 150 participants attended the 2008 Building Healthy Lifestyles Conference on Feb 28, 29 and March 1.
Highlighting the theme of Modifying Lifestyles to Enhance Physical Activity, Diet, and Reduce Cardiovascular Disease, speakers from the US and Sweden spoke about the effects of diet and lifestyle choices on the development and progression of atherosclerosis, how the disease impacts vulnerable populations, and highlighted ways we can design programs to enhance heart-healthy choices. Pictured is Dr. Stuart Quan from Harvard University speaking about the impact of sleep on cardiovascular disease risks. EXW Faculty Serve on the International Advisory Committee for the “Win Health Forum” – A Physical Activity Promotion Program in Madrid, Spain
Dr. Brent Alvar and Dr. Barbara Ainsworth are members of the International Advisory Committee for an innovative physical activity promotion program sponsored by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Sport in Madrid, Spain. Foro Gana Salud, when translated means the Win Health Forum, seeks to become a bridge of communication and action between organizations in Madrid to promote physical activity at the community level. Organized by Professor Alfonso Jimenez of the European University of Madrid, Dr. Alvar and Dr. Ainsworth were at the January 24, 2008 “kick-off” event held in Madrid. Other members of the International Advisory Committee are Dr. Luis Rojos Marcos (Columbia University), Dr. Steven Blair (University of South Carolina), Dr. I-Min Lee (Harvard University), Dr. Bess Marcus (Brown University), Dr. Avery Faigenbaum (College of New Jersey), Dr. Stefano Balducci (Rome, Italy), and Dr. Alejandro Lucia Mules (European University of Madrid).
