ASUKI Step

Arizona State University and Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden are hosting a team-based, walking challenge to improve physical activity and health among faculty, staff, and graduate students.  ASUKI stands for Arizona State University + Karolinska Institutet.  ASUKI Step is a pedometer intervention where employees are encouraged to compete in walking, within both universities and between departments and universities. We are attempting to engage at least 1200 employees at each university.

ASUKI step - the details
The challenge runs from March 16 to September 16, 2009. All faculty, staff, and graduate students from ASU Polytechnic, Downtown, and Tempe campuses are invited to form teams of 3 to 4 people from their department to participate. Each team has a captain who can register their team on the website: www.asukistep.org.  Registration is free and open from February 19th to March 9th, 2009.  The goal is to walk 10,000 steps/day.

The ASUKI Step will have kick-off events on three ASU campuses:

  • Polytechnic campus
Tuesday, February 24th from 12-1 pm
    Physical Activity Center

  • Downtown campus
Wednesday, February 25th from 12-1 pm
    Room 344/345, Nursing Building

  • Tempe campus
Thursday, February 26th from 12-1 pm
    Student Recreation Center

ASUKI step – the contest – what can you win?
The ultimate incentive is of course a better health through increased physical activity. To participate in this contest with co-workers can also help to build new and rewarding partnerships within departments. Of course, we want our own university to be the most active one, and the winning university will be awarded a trophy. The winning team from each university will win a study tour to the other university. Winners from KI will go to visit ASU and of course make a tour to Grand Canyon, while the winners from ASU will go to visit KI during their 200th anniversary year and they will also go to the beautiful archipelago of Stockholm. There will be a number of surprise gifts handed out during the contest period, for example souvenirs from the partner universities, movie tickets or gift cards.

ASUKI step - the research project
The workplace pedometer intervention will take place in the two academic settings (Karolinska Institutet and Arizona State University) simultaneously. Around 1200 volunteer staff at each university will be involved in the pedometer intervention which will start in March and go on until September 2009. All participants will register pedometer steps and complete a determinant’s questionnaire at baseline and end of the 6 month project. A randomly selected subgroup of approximately 300 individuals will be more extensively studied at baseline, 3 months, 6 months, and a follow-up at 9 months, using the questionnaire, accelerometers, anthropometric measures, fitness test(Åstrand Submaximal Cycle Ergometer Test) , blood pressure. This intervention study uses previous knowledge on effectiveness of interventions; peer support, general social support at the workplace as well as tangible incentives for increasing physical activity.

How do you register?
1) Form a team with 3-4 members from your Department
2) Elect a team captain
3) Team captain visits www.asukistep.org to register the team
4) Team members sign an informed consent and physical activity health questionnaire
5) Team captain return forms to study center (ASU Mail Code 0180) get your participant code to register individually, and your are ready to go!

Remember:  The contest is free and registration is open from February 19th to March 9th, 2009 only.
