Dr. Alvar's area of research interest is related to human performance. His research centers primarily around athletes, but also involved the professional area of firefighting. He has been researching strength measurement, exercise for the purpose of strength gain and health-related benefits from strength training.  Dr. Alvar's graduate students are currently focused on strength training, detraining, performance measures, and job performance of firefighters.
